Bubble Wrap or the Air cap is the brand name that comes from its inventors, Sealed Air Corporation for a lightweight, transparent plastic cushioning material used as a protective layer to perfectly cushion the delicate and fragile objects during their transit. It is made from polyethylene resins which are melted and transformed into two sheets which stick together and capture the air forming the wrap.
The multicolored wraps are generally made of plastic. Some varieties of the plastic used are bio-degradable or recycled resins which are also degradable. The sizes vary from 6 X 8 inches to 24 X 50 inches. The thickness of the sheet varies between 3/16 inch and 1 inch. The material may have cells of different sizes which go up to dimensions of 2 inches X 4 inches. The standard length of rolls is about 100 meters. The various forms of wraps available are:
The wraps come in forms of pouches, bags, tubes, mailing envelopes, and sheets.
Generally, wraps are used around the outside of furniture or as padding inside shipping containers. They make good insulation for dog houses and as play placemats for kids. They are also used to protect outdoor plants against freezing as a sleeping bag or a floating device in case of an emergency and as insulation for the glass doors and windows or as an emergency splint for an injured limb. Popping of the bubbles is therapeutic and stress relieving for many people.
Laying the object on the wrap such that it rests on the air chambers and the wrap’s flat edge is on the outer side of the object is the most appropriate way of using it. Giving the wrap multiple folds securely cushions the objects. It is always advisable to pre-wrap some items to avoid sticking of plastic dots on the objects. Small strips of tape after wrapping can also be used to secure the wrap and assure that it stays in place.
The inventors would soon be making commercially available an inflatable version of the wrap making it easier not only to store in small spaces but also to ship. The application side of it will see a rise in coming days.
